Vortex Flowmeters Support Boiler Water Monitoring at a Hazardous Waste Plant
Project overview

Total Pressure Solutions supplied a range of vortex flowmeters for a specialist installation at an upper-tier COMAH chemical incineration & treatment plant in Ellesmere Port, Northwest England.
The site carries out the high-temperature incineration of hazardous materials, as well as the treatment of Low Level Radioactive Waste. Due to the demanding operating environment, the customer required a reliable flow measurement solution capable of handling elevated pressures while meeting the project’s technical, commercial and delivery requirements.
The application
The flowmeters were required for installation on steam-raising boilers operating at steam pressures of approximately 19–20 bar(g).

Although installed as part of the boiler system, the meters are used to measure treated water supplied at a pressure of approximately 23 bar(g). Accurate and dependable measurement of this water flow is paramount for monitoring the boiler process and assessing the performance of the installation.
The challenge
The customer had a specific application requirement and needed support identifying a suitable flow measurement technology.
In addition to meeting the operating conditions, the proposed solution needed to offer:
• Suitability for treated water at approximately 23 bar(g)
• Reliable performance within a steam-raising boiler application
• A shorter lead time than competing options
• Competitive project pricing
• The potential to support a wider rollout across further sites

The solution
Following a review of the application, Total Pressure Solutions recommended and supplied Supmea LUGB Vortex Flowmeters.
Vortex flowmeter technology provided a practical solution for the customer’s process conditions, while the availability of the LUGB enabled Total Pressure Solutions to respond within the required project timescale.
The TPS team worked closely with the customer to understand the operating parameters and identify an appropriate product, rather than offering a standard off-the-shelf recommendation.
Why Total Pressure Solutions?
Total Pressure Solutions was selected as the solutions provider because of its ability to combine technical support with a commercially competitive proposal.
Key factors included:
• Quicker lead times compared with alternative suppliers
• Competitive pricing
• A solutions-led approach to a specific application
• Support in identifying an appropriate flow measurement product
• The ability to assist with future installations if the trial is successful
Potential for future rollout

The Ellesmere Port installation represents an important first step in a wider programme, demonstrating the potential of the Supmea LUGB Vortex Flowmeters within this demanding application. The project also creates a strong foundation for similar installations to be introduced across the UK.
